George V Silver Chased Cigarette Card Case: Bham 1914

This is a George V Sterling Silver cigarette case, by the silversmiths Smith & Bartlam, & fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1914.

The case is rectangular in form & has a curved profile to enable it to slip into a pocket etc.

The front & back of the case have been chased in a very much classical style with a floral, ribbon, & festoon design.

The case is opened via a sprung push button & a thumb lift to reveal the interior which, at one point was gilded, but is now mostly rubbed.

The case is fully hallmarked to the interior with the makers mark 'S & BM' (for Smith & Bartlam), the anchor (Birmingham), the lion passant (925 sterling), & the date letter 'p' ( 1914 - 15). The lion passant & the date letter are repeated on the opposite side.

Condition is Good with only two very small & very shallow bruises. The surface is lightly uneven to the touch (as is expected on a hand chased piece) - please see photos.

The case measures approx 3 1/4" in length, 3 1/8" by 2 1/8" (approx 7.9cm x 5.3cm). The weight is 42.7 g or 1.51 oz.
