Victorian Vesta Match Safe 'Candle in the Box' c1890

This is a Victorian combination vesta / matchsafe & candle holder (often referred to as a 'Candle in the Box'), most probably of British manufacture, & dating to the late 19th Century.

The rectangular box is made from plated brass and has a striker on one end (made from a chemical compound suitable for both safety & friction matches), and a hinged section on the opposite end, to which, the candle socket is attached.

The box is opened via a sprung push button to reveal the interior which consists of a large compartment for matches & a smaller compartment for a small candle.

The hinged end of the candle compartment swings out to reveal the candle socket which allows the candle to stand upright whilst the lid of the matchsafe is closed.

A similar holder can be found on page 91 (Fig. 329) in the Alsford / Schiffer book 'Match Holders'.

Condition is Fine. There is some plate loss to the box & interior lid, and the striker compound is mostly worn. The spring and hinge are Fine.

The box measures approx 2 1/2" long by 1 5/8" wide (approx 6.3cm x 4cm).

Overall, a scarce little box in fine condition for it's 120 odd years.
