This is a pair of 11 3/8" Victorian brass ejector 'The Queen of Diamonds' candlesticks, produced by James Clew & Sons of Birmingham, & dating to 1897. The sticks have cut corner square bases and a large hexagonal 'diamond' pattern knop towards the top of the stem. The front of the base on each stick is impressed with 'THE QUEEN OF DIAMONDS'. Both sticks have their original push-up ejection mechanisms (original rods but the button missing on one stick), with one of the stick's mechanism seized. These sticks were part of a series, produced by James Clew & Sons, to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The Ace, King (which we will be listing soon), & Queen were produced in 1897, and the later Prince & Princess in 1902: all can be found on pages 220 - 223 in the reference 'The English Candlestick, 1425 - 1925' by E Koldeweij. Condition is fine for their 112 years. The only points to note are that there are a few spots of tarnishing, the impressed marks are partially worn, & the flange of each sconce is slightly out of true, all of which would be expected on an original pair of un-restored sticks - please see photos. Each stick is approx 11 3/8" tall (approx 28.9cm). Due to the weight (approx 1.5 Kg unpacked), collection is welcome within the Edinburgh / W Lothian area, with delivery possible - please phone or e- mail. Overall, a fine pair of large candlesticks, in great condition for their 112 years.
