This is a late Victorian vesta case or match safe with a trick / puzzle opening, advertising Dewar's Whisky, & dating to around c.1900. The rectangular case is made from plated brass & has a slightly curved profile. The front and rear of the case is embossed with 'DEWAR'S PERTH WHISKY' (Dewar's opened their distillery in Perth, Scotland, in 1896). The box has a hidden or concealed hinge, & is opened by pushing down on the front edge of the lid, which flips the lid open. The hinge / opening is enclosed to the interior of the case, so that it wouldn't ignite the matches upon opening. A similar holder can be found on page 85 in the Alsford/Schiffer book 'Match Holders'. Condition is very Good. Unusually, most of the plate is still intact, with rubbing to the front edge of the lid & the front edge of the case (where the striker is located). The opening / hinge is fine. The case measures approx 2 1/8" x 1 1/2" (approx 5.4cm x 3.8cm).
