Victorian Silver Sugar Shovel Spoon MARY CHAWNER 1839

This is an early Victorian Sugar Shovel, by the renowned female silversmith Mary Chawner, & fully hallmarked for London 1839.

The shovel is of the Fiddle pattern, & has a terminal which is free of any engraving (with no erasures).

The shovel is fully hallmarked with the makers mark 'MC' (Mary Chawner, widow of William Chawner), the leopards head (London), the lion passant (925 Sterling), the date letter, a gothic 'D' (1839 - 40), & the Victoria head duty mark (This particular duty mark is the 1st of the Victoria head duty marks, & was only used for 1 year, between 1839 - 40, before being changed).

The L/H edge of the bowl (nearest the heel) has approx 1cm of 'ruffling'. This is minor & could be easily rectified by any silversmith.

Condition, other than the small area of ruffling, is Fine, with no wear to the bowl & crisp hallmarks.

The shovel measures approx 5 3/4" in length (approx 14.7cm), & weighs 33.1 g, 1.17 oz, or 1.06 Troy.

Overall, a scarce spoon from a renowned maker, & in good condition for it's 170 years.
