This is a Georgian Scottish Silver Toddy or Sauce ladle, made during the reign of George III by the renowned silversmith John Ziegler, & fully hallmarked for Edinburgh 1809 The ladle is of the Celtic Point pattern, a variation of the Old English pattern with a pointed terminal. The terminal bears an engraved Armorial Crest consisting of a demi prancing horse with a crown or coronet encircled (gorged) round it's neck. Underneath the crest is a scroll bearing the initials 'PER'. The bowl is circular, with a flat(ish) bottom. The ladle is fully hallmarked to the rear with a very rubbed, double struck apprentice? mark (?S or ?C?), the George head (duty mark), the thistle (925 Sterling), the date letter 'd' (1809 - 10), & the makers mark 'Z' (one of the Ziegler dynasty working at that time, probably John Ziegler). As is quite common with Georgian Silver, the town mark has not been struck. Condition is Fine, with no dings, dents, repairs, or erasures. The hallmarks, with the exception of the apprentice? mark, are crisp. The ladle measures approx 6 1/4" in length (approx 16cm), & weighs 23.5 g, 0.83 oz, or 0.76 Troy. Overall, a stunning 200 year old Scottish ladle, of good proportions, & in Fine condition.
