This is a pair of 12 1/2" Victorian brass ejector 'The King of Diamonds' candlesticks, produced by James Clew & Sons of Birmingham, & dating to 1897. The sticks have cut corner square bases and a large hexagonal 'diamond' pattern knop towards the top of the stem. The front of the base on each stick is impressed with 'THE KING OF DIAMONDS'. One stick has it's original, but seized, push-up ejection mechanism (button missing). The other stick has had it's mechanism removed, but the original rod will be included - please see photo. These sticks were part of a series, produced by James Clew & Sons, to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The Ace, King & Queen were produced in 1897, and the later Prince & Princess in 1902: all can be found on pages 220 - 223 in the reference 'The English Candlestick, 1425 - 1925' by E Koldeweij. Condition is fair for their 112 years. One stick leans, the base on one stick has had a slight knock, thus it 'rocks' if pushed, & the flange of one sconce is out of true - this is an original pair of un-restored sticks & there is nothing that couldn't be rectified. Each stick is approx 12 1/2" tall (approx 31.7cm). Due to the weight (over 2Kg unpacked), collection is welcome within the Edinburgh / W Lothian area, with delivery possible - please phone or e- mail. Note to Overseas Bidders: The postage quoted is the total cost although, each stick will be sent in a separate package (due to weight). Overall, a fine pair of large, 112 year old candlesticks in original, un-restored condition.
