This is a figural table cigar lighter in the form of a lamppost or street light, made of brass (although believed to be plated originally) & with a makers mark to the base, & almost certainly dating to the early 20th Century. The design of the lamp is very much of the Art Nouveau period, with an ornate cast circular base, which stands on three feet, & an Acanthus decorated 'stem'. The top of the post is in the form of a hexagonal lamp & has a decorative cap, which pulls off to reveal the lighter. The lighter (which can be pulled out of the lamp fixing for filling) is tubular in form, with a simple wheel, flint, & wick mechanism. The base of the lighter has the original? filling (seems to be some sort of wool or fibre). The top (lamp) can be unscrewed from the post. The base has a makers or foundry mark of a left facing Lion standing on either an elongated 'E' or three bars. Upon very careful inspection, the lamp would seem to have been originally silver? plated, although you really need a glass to notice any traces of plate. Condition is Fine. The lighter lights (albeit a very small flame, I have not fuelled the lighter or touched the flint), & the only damage to note is a small bruise to the top of the cap. The lighter measures approx 9 1/2" tall (approx 24cm). |
