Large Art Deco Silver Golf Trophy 1918: 15.7 TROY OZ

This is a large & heavy solid Sterling Silver trophy cup, by the silversmiths Wilmott Manufacturing Co, & fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1918 (with a later inscription).

The form of the trophy is very 'Art Deco', with it's classic shape & large angular handles. The rim of the lip and base have a gadrooned design.

The trophy, although fully hallmarked for 1918, has a much later engraved inscription, which reads ; 'GRIFFIN GOLFING SOCIETY CHALLENGE CUP presented 1960'. Due to the heavy gauge of Silver, the inscription could easily be erased although, filled & polished would be a better option.

The trophy is fully hallmarked with the makers mark 'WM Co' (Wilmott Manufacturing Co), the lion passant (925 Sterling), the anchor (Birmingham), & the date letter 't' (1918-19).

Condition is fairly good for it's 91 years. There are 3 pinhead dents on the top of the L/H handle & a few tiny bruises on the edge, and there is a 1.3cm split on the outward bottom edge of the R/H handle (the handles are of hollow construction). The front of the cup has a shallow bruise & the rear has 2 or 3 shallow bruises (hard to see due to the heavy gauge Silver). The base is very slightly uneven & would have been displayed on a wooden base.

The trophy measures approx 10" high, with a width (handle to handle) of approx 8 1/2" (approx 25.3cm & 21.3cm).

The trophy is UN WEIGHTED & weighs a substantial 487.3 g, 17.19 oz, or 15.67 Troy.

All in all, a very heavy 'Art Deco' trophy cup which could easily be brought back to it's former glory or, due to it's weight, could be scrapped (although it's really too good to melt).
