Victorian Mauchline Ware Stamp Holder ABBOTSFORD

This is a Victorian, Scottish Mauchline Ware novelty stamp holder in the Transfer Ware finish, featuring 'ABBOTSFORD', and dating to around 1880.

The stamp holder is in the form of a miniature, twin compartment, letter rack or writing stand, & is probably made from Oak & marked to the front 'Grown on the Lands of Abbotsford'.

The rear of the holder is decorated with a transfer scene of Abbotsford House & is entitled 'ABBOTSFORD'.

Abbotsford is the house built and lived in by Sir Walter Scott, the 19th century novelist, and author of classics such as Waverley, Rob Roy, Ivanhoe and The Lady of the Lake. The house was completed in 1824 & was opened to the public in 1833, five months after Sir Walter's death.

Condition is Fine, with no damage or wear to the transfer.

The holder measures approx 2" high, 1 3/8" wide, & 2 3/8" long (at widest points) or approx 5cm, 3.4cm, & 6.1cm
