Victorian Mauchline Bell Tape Measure MAUCHLINE HIGH ST

This is a Victorian, Scottish Mauchline Ware tape measure in the Transfer Ware finish, featuring 'HIGH STREET, MAUCHLINE', and dating to around 1880.

The tape measure is in the form of a bell, & is made from copal varnished sycamore.

The actual measure, made of cloth & marked in inches, is pulled out from a slot in the side of the bell & retracted by rotating the turned wood finial, located on top of the bell. The measure has it's original, wooden stop.

One side of the bell is decorated with a transfer scene of 'MAIN STREET, MAUCHLINE'.

Mauchline is the town in East Ayrshire, Scotland, which gives it's name to Mauchline Ware, & where it began around 1820, with the manufacture of snuff boxes.

Condition is Fine, with no damage or wear to the transfer.

The tape measure stands approx 2" high, including the finial (approx 5cm).
