Victorian Mauchline Ware Notebook ARBROATH ABBEY

This is a Victorian, Scottish Mauchline Ware notebook in the Photographic Ware finish, and dating to around 1890 - 1900.

The book has copal varnished sycamore boards & a grained leather spine.

The front of the book has a photographic transfer entitled 'ARBROATH ABBEY, ST CATHERINE'S ALTER'.

The interior of the book has lined paper pages, in a string binding.

Arbroath Abbey is famous in Scottish history for its association with the Declaration of Arbroath, in which Scotland’s nobles swore their independence from England in 1320. St Catherine's Alter, which stood in the south transept of the Abbey, has a St. Catherine wheel window, twelve feet in diameter, placed over it in the upper part of the gable, & gives the town it's sometimes local name 'the Round O'

Condition of the exterior is Fine, the boards, spine, & edges are fine & the transfer is undamaged. The interior is fair, the string binding is tight but the glued down endpapers have bled, particularly at the back, a few pages are missing, & there is a pencil inscription to the front & rear endpapers.

The notebook measures approx 3 3/8" x 2 1/8" (approx 8.8cm x 5.5cm).
