Victorian Mauchline Photographic Ware Glove Box

This is a Victorian, Scottish Mauchline Ware glove box in the Photographic Ware finish, and dating to around 1890.

The box is made from copal varnished sycamore & is constructed using 'tongue and lap' joints, with two hinges to the rear (the hinges are the less common, non decorative hinges, where only the interlocking joints are visible from the outside).

The top of the box has a large photographic transfer depicting a large house? with a glass orangery to the rear, set within formal gardens, & with Ladies & Gentlemen, in period dress, enjoying the gardens. In the background, there is a similar house? (to the left) & what looks like an industrial plant (to the right). One corner of the photo has a lozenge containing the letters 'LBD'.

The box is opened via a decorative catch to the front, to reveal the interior, which is fully lined in a blue 'morocco' paper with cream, silk rope edging. The base is covered in blue 'morocco' paper.

Condition is fine, the 'thumb press' part of the catch is missing (which tends to be the norm on Victorian Mauchline boxes), there are a few light marks to the transfer & loss to the base paper, & general, but very light, age related wear - fine for it's 120 years.

The box measures approx 7 7/8" long, 4" wide, & 1 7/8" deep (approx 20cm, 10cm, & 5cm).
