This is an Art Deco period Silver & Guilloche Enamel compact, by the illustrious Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co (who later took over Garrards), & fully hallmarked for London 1934. The compact is rectangular in form, with the front finished in a pale blue guilloche enamel & the rear having an engine turned decoration. The enamelled front panel has a central, stylised 'sky scraper' design, from which, radiates a deep 3D 'sunburst' pattern that changes from a very pale blue through to a deeper blue. The case is opened via a thumb lift & catch, to reveal the interior which has a large mirror on one side & a hinged powder compartment on the other side. The top of the powder section, which comprises a Silver frame containing a mesh sieve, is opened via a decorative sliding button, & hinges upwards to allow access to the powder compartment. The base of the powder section is fully hallmarked with the makers mark 'G&SCo over Ltd' (Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co), the lion passant (925 Sterling), the leopards head (London), & the date letter 't' (1934 - 35). The lip of the powder frame is embossed with 'GOLDSMITHS & SILVERSMITHS CO LTD - 112 REGENT ST - W' Condition is fine. The enamel has no chips, cracks, or loss; only very light, age related surface wear & 2 very small marks (under the glass enamel) on the top R/H corner. The rear of the case has 2 tiny bruises, & the interior gilding in the base of the powder compartment is worn - fine for it's 75 years. The compact measures approx 3 1/4" x 2 7/8" (approx 8.4cm x 7.3cm). The case is heavy for it's size, with a total weight (inc the enamel & mirror) of 145.7 g or 5.14 oz. Overall, a simply stunning ladies compact, of the very highest quality, & so evocative of the Art Deco period.
