It is very delicately carved, with open eyes conveyed by simple outlines, sensuous lips and a strong slightly cleft chin. A small stucco head in excellent condition, it dates to the 4th or 5th centuries CE and comes originally from one of the Buddhist monastic complexes in what is now Northwestern Pakistan or Eastern Afghanistan.
