A large stucco head in very good condition, it dates to the 4th or 5th centuries CE and comes originally from one of the Buddhist monastic complexes in what is now Northwestern Pakistan or Eastern Afghanistan. The face is very skillfully modelled with arched eyebrows above heavy-lidded eyes, an aquiline nose and gently smiling lips. Like many of the best Gandharan stuccos it manages to convey both sensuality and the life of the spirit. Sadly, such pieces are much safer in private collections than in the sites for which they were originally made.
Height: 24 cm, width: 15.9 cm.
Condition: There are minor abrasions to the thin surface skin of the stucco, and losses to the top of the head and the ears, but overall this Bodhisattva is in excellent condition, with no restoration.
Purchased in Peshawar, Pakistan in 1969.
