This single handled jar is rare, forming a very early jug shape; it was made about 4000 years ago in what is today Gansu Province, China. With some impressed decoration around the neck, it is finely-potted and relatively high-fired to a reddish-orange colour. It has a smooth burnished surface and a loop handle from the waist to the wide flared mouth. Around the rim there are the remnants of a pigment or lacquer which appears to have been applied to protect the rim. Size: h: 12.3cm, dia; 11.7cm Condition: Good; no apparent repairs with expected wear.
