SCIENCE Botany The first description of the sexual system of plants to appear in English Botany. Containing An Explanation Of the Theory of that Science; Extracted from the Works of Dr. Linnaeus; With Twelve Copper-Plates, Two Explanatory Tables, An Appendix, And Glossary. The Fourth Edition, Corrected, With Additions. By James Lee, Nurseryman, At the Vineyard, Hammersmith. Publication Date: 1788 Publisher: London: J.F. and C. Rivington, et al. Author: Lee, James Binding: Original full leather binding of marbleized calf. Bright gilt multi banding on the spine. Gilt lettered direct. Binding is solid and shows only minor wear. Leather is not dried out and retains a rich patina and healthy shine. Volume measures 8 1/2" x 5 3/8". Non-decorative endpapers. Old repair to front free endpaper~ appears a corner had been removed and replaced. Two old ink signatures atop title page. Description: xixiv, 434pp. All twelve full page plates with multiple images are present and in clean condition. Text is clean, with a light damp stain to exterior lower corner of pages through Table of Contents. It is the first work in English to present botanists with Linnaeus's sexual system of classification and with his terminology, based on his own writings, and it did much to promote the knowledge, and extend the progress and popularity, of the system in this country." It also gave Lee and his "Vineyard" nursery acclaim and notoriety. Lee, was the nurseryman at the Vineyard, Hammersmith, and his translation of Linnaeus's Philosophia Botanica, under the title of Introduction to Botany, was the first description of the sexual system of plants to appear in English.
