| HISTORY 1848 Lives of the Queens of England, from the Norman Conquest Set of six Original bound books containing twelve volumes providing biographical accounts of the Queens of England from Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, to Queen Anne, who reigned at the beginning of the 18th century. The books make extensive use of official records and other public documents and include numerous extracts from them, as well as providing interesting information about manners and customs. Agnes Strickland was an English historical writer, specializing in biographical studies of British royalty. She began her literary career writing historical romances in verse, published while she was in her 20s. She then turned to authoring prose histories for young people. Then, with her sister’s assistance, she undertook the ambitious project of producing The Lives of the Queens of England, which appeared over a period of several years beginning in 1840. In the meantime, she also edited the letters of Mary, Queen of Scots for publication in 1843. In addition to an abridged version of her Queens of England she also authored The Lives of the Queens of Scotland (eight volumes 1850-59), The Bachelor Kings of England (1861), The Lives of the Seven Bishops (1866) and Lives of the Last Four Stuart Princesses (1872). In 1871, she obtained a civil-list pension in recognition of her achievements. Condition: Very good, the interior contents having usual light overall toning and scattered very light foxing. | |||||
