| SCIENCE Astronomy. Cosmos: A Sketch of a Physical Description of the Universe. By Alexander Von Humboldt 1769-1859 Translated from the original German by E.C. Otté. New York: Harper & Brothers. No date, but circa 1860s. Two volumes in one. An early English language reprint of the first two volumes of Humboldt’s classic study of the unifying principles of science and nature. Two volumes only. Cosmos was published in parts over a number of years, with the unfinished fifth and final volume published posthumously in 1862. A monumental, wide-ranging work that offers an illuminating view of scientific thought in the mid-19th century. Subjects in these two volumes include astronomy, geology, geography, magnetism, botany, climatology, meteorology, oceanography, anthropology, cartography, and zoology. Illustrated by a steel engraved frontispiece portrait of Humboldt. Engraving is dated 1850. Two volumes in one. Paginated separately: xxii, 375 pages, index; xviii, 367 pages, index. Clothbound hardcover, 7.75 by 5.25 inches. Brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. VG with some wear at the corners and extremities. Small ownership stamp (S.E. Grant) crossed out on the front free endpaper, with a later name (Rostlund) written just below. Binding sound and tight. Some typical age-toning, but text pages clean otherwise. A solid, attractive volume overall. | ||||||
