Shahnama c1600 The Persian "Book of Kings"
The Poet Firdausi's Masterpiece In Persian Verse Written Around 1000, Tells The Stories Of Ancient Heroes And Kings Of Pre-Islamic Iran; (Picture 8 is an overlay comparison of samples of our pages with those of The Iranian National Museum pages and the British Museum pages all from the same School. Tint differences were done to highlight the different sources. The commonality of format, colors, and style are obviously)It Is Rich With Exploits Of Love And Betrayal, Courage, And Valor That Lend Themselves To Illustration. This Epic Work Remained One Of The Most Popular In Iran, And The First-Known Illustrated Copies Date To The Ilkhanid Period. As No Illustrated Copies Of The Shahnama Are Known From Before The Early 1300S, The Manuscript Might Not Yet Have Had An Established Iconography, Leaving The Ilkhanid Patron And The Best Artists At Court Free To Experiment With The Choice Of Pictorial Events, Styles, And Themes. 17Th Century (1612) Good Condition. These Are Not 19Th Century Copies. Have Provenance To Prominent Collection Back To The King Of Persia Given As a Gift. Have The Letter Of Presentation. This Listing Is For One Page. The page is in all original condition, not restored in any way. Research complete, Have Provenance The most likly period is mid 16th to early 17th century. School: Safavid, is a likly candidate.

Sotheby's sold last 1620 Early 17th Century version at 115,000.00 Pounds April 2012 Lot 484. These are a bit earlier and they are obviously paintings not just text. The Sotheby's pages were Text only.

The Colophon Picture included here references the page for sale. (It’s FROM THE an Iranian copy of the Book of KINGS)Paper color variation is due to where and how they were stored over the past 400 years. The format match along with the outer frame format. The Red line format of this Book of Kings is very distinct and occurs in no other known copy in existence The Colophon picture (Picture 6) was collected from material from the Iranian National Museum..

There is one other page which will be listed shortly. We have "Absolute Provenance back to the "King of Persia" *Iran) in the 1790's given as a gift to (Presented to William Gaston." It was stored in the Gaston Family archives, and is part of the Gaston Estate. We also have newspaper clippings of the Ceremony when it was presented to Governor Gaston, also from this estate.

Pages 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are held by the British Museum. This page is not a paste down; it has full 4 columb text on the back side. The text does have some water damage but is fully readable. View last 4 high definition photos to see gilding. These pieces are fully gilded. They were originally photographed under glass which has taken away from there true brilliance. Working on having the full photos retaken after removing them from the glass they are now in. Have now included the back text side of the other page for your comnparison to the Iranian colophon from this book.
