This rare and beautiful 6-3/8" t. sculpture was made by Cleveland School artist Edris Eckhardt, who was a student of Guy Cowan's at the Cleveland School (now Institute) of Art in the early 1930s and did some intern-style design for him. After the pottery closed in 1931, and around the time she graduated, Eckhardt became the head of the Cleveland Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, making storybook figurines in ceramics as a means of teaching children to read, while also keeping ...click for details

$375.00

This rare art deco figure measures about 8.25" tall and is hand-incised Waylande Gregory, along with his WG monogram (from the New York period). The shape was originally designed for Cowan Pottery, before 1931, where it was either a lamp or a decanter, whose crown was removable. The story went that these were a good place to hide one's small amount of still liquor during Prohibition.

This rare art deco Rhead punch bowl measures about 11" in diameter and is about 5.25" tall, although in life it looks absolutely massive. Bound to be either a Frederick Alfred Rhead or Charlotte Rhead design. Fine example of British ceramics--and one of the most stunning European art pottery items I've had the honor to own. (Pattern is not mentioned in Bernard Bumpus's book COLLECTING RHEAD POTTERY.)
