About 7" t. No marks, other than the raised name of the designer, F.J. Moody, along the edge of the base.

This piece was designed by Francis Moody in 1929, while she was enrolled at Ohio State University. Her husband Leslie (Les) Moody was majoring in ceramics there. In 1931 they were both employed by Abingdon (Illinois), where this piece was made in what seems to be a limited number, only in the company's first year or two of artware production.

They used paper labels then, so...

This beautifully decorated 6" t. head vase depicts one of the sirens of the American silver screen--is she Jane Wyman? Claudette Colbert?

Hand-painted details, with "full face" makeup, including plucked eyebrows, mascara, rouge, lipstick--and just the right hat--held in place by a scarf around her neck. There is a three-dimensional rose in her bodice (and hopefully not a bee in her bonnet). Dates to the 1950s or 1960s.

Marked UCAGCO in an inkstamp, and die-impressed with an NC ...

This rare 9-7/8" plate was designed by internationally famous Cleveland artist Viktor Schreckengost. The shape is Diana, introduced in 1934. This striking art deco pattern is called Betsy Ross, consisting of small stylized red flowers on a white background. Faint backstamp.

In VIKTOR SCHRECKENGOST AND 20TH CENTURY DESIGN (the catalog for Viktor's 2000 retrospective exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art), Henry Adams observes that Diana (and the shape Americana, also from 1934) "intr...

About 6.25" t. Beautiful and unusual piece!

During 1929 and early 1930, the internationally renowned sculptor Alexander Archipenko taught ceramics classes in New York. The works of his students are well designed, but exceptionally rare. They bear an ARKO logo (using letters from his surname). Some examples have the designer's name too, but not all.

This piece bears the original typed paper label, identifying the glaze as "Sang Boeuf" (oxblood red), the name as "Lady in Coat Ash...

This unusual 5.25" enamel was found in a Cleveland house sale, so was probably drawn by a Cleveland artist, where enameling was an important design focus at the Cleveland School (now Institute) of Art. This piece is titled "Misplaced Comma" and appears to satirize either a writer, editor, or attorney.

On the back are marks that read "Christmas 1949 / Berit Studios / Arthur & Sidney LeVine."
