This example of Valerie ("Vally") Wieselthier's design work for the Wiener Werkstatte (Viennese Workshop, Austria) is 4-3/8" t. x 9.5" across. Die-impressed with the WW logo, AUSTRIA, the shape number, and the artist initials VW. Red terra cotta clay with decorations in an almost iridescent tin-based glossy glaze. This vase is a stunning example of Art Deco or Modern design, dating to the 1920s (perhaps earlier). An identical WW example by Wieselthier is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), so calling this design "museum quality" is clearly beyond dispute. The cubist hand-painted stripes and other geometrical decorations are reminiscent of the colors used by the artists Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Very small nicks to the pointed upper tips of the handles, whose Orientalist shape modifies the circular central bowl. An insignificant glaze loss at the foot, in a yellow section. Exceptional condition! A rare opportunity for the advanced collector! NOTE: If you see a pink spot in an odd place in my photos, it's just a reflection caused by the camera. Please inquire for detailed closeup photos of the coloring, motifs, and nicks. |
