This 7.75" t. sculpture by Howard Kottler (1930-1989) won a 1st Prize in Ceramic Sculpture when exhibited (in multiples) at the 1956 Cleveland Museum of Art "May" Show. Originally, the "Cat" was shown with a wooden base, which is not present in this case. A graduate of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Kottler was a Cleveland native and taught for many years at the University of Wisconsin. According to one website, "His work is a reflection of the personality: exuberant, irreverent, provocative, making liberal use of irony and double entendres. He is described by Failing as an 'unpredictable iconoclast whose mode of address was innuendo.'" This cat is clearly intended to be humorous, and is hand-colored and glazed (although cast). Rare piece today. No nicks, chips, hairlines or repairs. Minor crazing in some spots, mostly on the back of the head. |
