18th Century Santo
Offered here is a fascinating, hand carved wood bust of two-faced figure. It is Philipino, Catholic, and 18th century. Whether this depicts the two sides of man, or Christ (or an angel) and Satan, I do not know. Either way, it's definitely an interesting religious artifact. The carving is very skilled and finely detailed. The "good" side has soft features and a beatific expression. The devil side has a horn, a pointy moustache, an upturned eye with a heavy brow, a pointy ear and pointy beard. There are losses. In some places the gesso shows, in some places the wood shows. I have elected not to clean it. The head and ball are mounted on a square base which is, of course, much later. The statue stands 13" including the base, and the base is 5.25" square.
