Early Black Forest Glove Box, 1858, Signed
Simply exquisite glove box carved on all sides and the top to resemble basketweave. The top is decorated with vines and a bouquet of flowers that reaches from end to end. The carving of the flowers and stems and leaves is realistic and in high relief with a three dimensional rose as the centerpiece of the arrangement. It is marked on the bottom Switzerland 1858. It is signed on a card attached to the bottom but the signature is illegible. I have attributed the signature to the maker, but it could have been the owner's signature I would think. The condition is very fine. There is an old chip in a rose petal that is hardly noticable, and the bottom part of the lock is not present. The size is 11/14" by 4", and is about 4" to the top of the decoration.
