| This delightful little cabinet had a near life size gesso statue of the Pieta when I first saw it. It appears to be made of a soft light wood, perhaps pine, with wonderful carved lettering on three sides, rope trim on the corners and top and on the drawer, little carved rosettes, and large hearts on each side, one with flowers and the other with the crown of thorns. I believe the words are Polish. There is an ivory or bone key escutcheon on the drawer. The top is unfinished because the statue sat there. The color is a pale sage or celadon, with dark green and gold trim. There is evidence of old gilding on the trim. There is also evidence of pale pink paint in carved recesses. The pink was applied later and then removed, and what is on the chest now is original. The chest stands on pad feet, the drawer is lined in purple velvet, there is one shelf inside the door, the back is plain. The dimensions are 27" across, 18" deep and 30" high. Late 19th century to early 20th. Please look at the enlargements. | ||||||||
