| This is a very striking portrait by Rhoda Dawson dated 1932. Miss Dawson was an English artist who went to Newfoundland in 1930 to work with the Grenfell Mission. In 1934 she went to Twillingate, where she worked in the hospital run by the American physician and surgeon John Olds, one of Newfoundland's most celebrated practitioners. Her work at Twillingate included some graphic operating room scenes and a strong portrait of Olds. I have been unable to determine the subject of this portrait. Rhoda Dawson's designs at Grenfell and her paintings depicted local life and work, and her work is considered an important cultural resource in Newfoundland. This portrait is charcoal on paper, signed and dated in the lower right corner in pencil. It is framed in a later frame. The image is 15 1/2" by 19 1/2". In the frame it measures 17 1/2" by 21 1/2". | ||
