| The subject of this landscape is the Colebrook River, Conn. It is painted by John or Jay Campbell Phillips (1873-1949). Mr. Phillips was born in New York City in 1873 and had his early art training at the Metropolitan Museum of Art School, the Art Students League and in the studio of William Merrit Chase. He began his career at the age of 15 as a magazine illustrator. He later made a speciality of depicting life in rural black America. Many of his works were shown at the National Academy of Design. He later turned to portrait painting and recieved many prizes including the Isador Portrait Prize. He is listed in The Artists Bluebook, Who Was Who in American Art, National Academy of Design Annual Exhibition Record, Mantle Fieldings Dictionary, The Society of Independent Artists, Dictionary of American Artists (Opitz), and the Index of Artists. He has an established auction record. The painting is on canvas board, it is in excellent condition and the size is 12" by 16". Please see the additional pictures for a detail and the signature. | ||
