| This is a huge, wonderful box. It measures 14.5" by 12.5" and is 6" high. It's layered like a cake and is just as delightful. Some of the layers are inlaid with different types of wood. Some of the layers are burled wood. The top is burl with inlay in a geometrical design outlining perfectly matched crotch wood sections. Carefully cut out and then inlaid are the numbers on the left, 18, and on the right, 88. The letter S below and then, of all things, E above, where you'd think it would be N for North. Inside is a a cut out and applied die cut paper basket of flowers. Blue velvet lines the sides, blue wool lines the bottom. On the bottom of the box is a thinly carved floral design that is difficult to see. I have photographed it, but I don't know how much good that will do. The box appears to be in original condition, or mostly so. The blue wool in the bottom may be a later replacement. The surface is crusty, there are a few strips of inlay missing, and some fine paint splatter on the side. I don't plan to do a thing to it. (I can send more pictures if you would like to have them, but I am allowed only 6 for the catalog.) | |||||||||
