| This is a wonderful box that is hand carved of, I believe, teak. It appears to be a letter box, or to contain documents, since it has a rack in the lid that would hold paperwork. There is a center tray that lifts out, and a side compartment that opens, as well as wells for ink and pencils. The lip is trimmed in brass, top and bottom, that is nailed down, and the hinges and lock are brass. There is oxidation on the metal but it is not rusty. The box appears to have good age to it, although I don't know how much. I will say at least 100 years, and probably more. The box is well carved, in a primitive fashion, and I can only imagine that it was quite a job in this hard wood. I wonder if it may have been a sailor's undertaking while at sea. It is quite heavy, has a beautiful patina, and is all hand made. The box measures 19" by 11" by 8" high. | ||||||||
