| This is a beautiful carved gilt wood something-or-other. The motif in the middle seems to be a bird with wings spread and a crown on it's head. There is something underneath that, that looks like some kind of vegetation, but I can't be certain. It has pretty carved scrolls on the top, bottom and sides, and it is flat on the back. A hook has been attached to the back so it can be hung on the wall. Much of the old water gilding has worn away to the gesso and the bare wood, and there are worm holes sprinkled throughout (no active infestation). I just consider that to be wonderful patina on this kind of thing. The piece measures 10.5" by 5.5" and is probably fairly early 19th century. | |||||
