| Offered here is a wonderful oil on board by the well listed American artist, Joseph Margulies (1896-1984). The painting depicts a European scene of a small market and people buying and selling vegetables. There is a woman on the stairs with her purse on her hip and a bower of flowers in her other hand, and a man looking out the upstairs window, both looking out as though at a camera. The painting is bright and vibrant, with skillfully layered colors that reveal the complexities of the objects and surfaces. Signed in the lower right corner. The frame is uninspired, but does what a frame should do, which is not detract from the painting. The painting is 18.5" by 25.5" in a 1" frame. Joseph Margulies died in 1984, so this painting was probably done before 1980. | |||||||||
