| Here we have a very interesting pouch, perhaps a purse, made of alligator embossed leather and an embossed brass top and two compartments. The main compartment, the interior, is lined in kid leather that was dyed a pale aqua. There is a shallow compartment in the top with a snap closure. The lid is embossed with a dramatic little scene (how I love these little dramas!) of a man who has stepped out of his log cabin with a shotgun taking aim at whoever is making off on horseback with his woman! It's not clear who the assailant is, but you can make out that the woman is in great distress. The background of the log cabin and the conifers leads me to think it may be the American frontier and that the perp is an Indian (I know that's politically incorrect, but it is a safe assumption). I found a tiny mark on the inside edge that looks like the star button on your telephone, but it's too small to photograph. The pouch is in very fine condition, all the hinges and closures work just fine. The lid measures approximately 3.5" by 2" and the pouch stands up about 1.5". Late 19th century. | |||||||||
