Small 19th C Anglo-Indian Wood and Ivory Alms Box
Okay, I am definitely winging it here, because I've never had one of these before, in fact I have never seen one of these before, but here is what I think it is. I think it is a late 19th century Anglo-Indian alms box, or mite box. When I was growing up we used to get mite boxes at church and we would put our coins in them for the less fortunate, and turn them in at church when they were full. (Mine was cardboard.) The wood is a dark and fairly hard wood but I do not know what kind it is. The ivory does have the characteristic graining in it. There are brass studs and brass rosettes all around the sides of the base and the circumference of the box. There is a lovely carved ivory applique containing the slot for the coins. The key escutcheon is missing and so is one brass stud. Everything else is in very fine condition. The box measures approximately 3" in diameter, is 4" high and the base is 2.75" by almost 3". Circa 1880-90.
