JAPANESE CLOISONNE by GREGORY IRVINE ISBN 1-85177-482-3. Published by Victoria and Albert Museum in 2006 as part of their Far Eastern Series. 204 Colour plates and 3 black and white illustrations. Gregory Irvine is Senior Curator in the V&A's Asian Department, where he specializes in Japanese metalwork. There is a 25 page introduction charting the development of Japanese cloisonne during the late Edo and the Meiji periods. For this he uses examples from the V&A's collection. The remainder of the book has just over 100 pages dedicated to the Edwin Davies collection of pieces mainly from the Meiji period. There are fine examples from the major players in Japanese cloisonne production including Namikawa Yasayuki, Namikawa Sosuke, Ando Jubei, Hayashi Kodenji, and many more. Where these items are signed a picture of the mark is included. This book is a must have for all connoisseurs of this Japanese art form. 30 GBP is the recommended retail price. |
