This is a superb little koro from the Meiji period - circa 1890, the ‘GOLDEN AGE’ of Japanese cloisonné production.
Worked in a mixture of silver and gilt wire it depicts, on a speckled sandy ground reminiscent of the enamels perfected by Namikawa Yasuyuki, two long-tailed phoenix in vibrant colours. The stylized decoration to the upper part of the vase and matching lid are enhanced with small amounts of goldstone that sparkle when caught by the light. It is finished with a pierced gilt brass finial and stands on three gilded feet. Of globular form it stands 3.5 inches (9 cms) tall and is of a similar width. Although unsigned the quality of the workmanship clearly indicates that it came from a top studio. The koro is in very good condition with no sign of any damage. Please see the pictures to appreciate it’s quality and email if you have any questions or need to see more images. |
