THESE ARE A FINE, COMPLEMENTARY PAIR OF MEIJI VASES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF JAPANESE CLOISONNE PRODUCTION.
In the manner of Namikawa Sosuke, and using fine silver wire, morning glories are naturalistically depicted climbing a bamboo cane. The enamellist, by use of colour variation and graduation, has skillfully shown the ageing of the leaves. On some he has even depicted the little nibbles taken by insects. The scarlet background is the true transparent akasuke enamel invented by Ota Jinnoei in 1880/81. The rim extending into the neck and the base along with the stylized upper and lower borders indicate that these vases were produced towards the end of the 19th Century – circa 1890. The vases are in good condition with just some minor, hard to see, stress lines to one vase. This does not detract from their beauty when displayed but will of course be reflected in the price. These super quality vases are quite tall at 9.5 inches (24 cms). |
