ANTIQUE CLOISONNE VASES JAPANESE MEIJI No1140

CLOISONNE VASES JAPANESE MEIJI KYOTO STYLE

Here are a good antique pair of standard cloisonné (yusen-jippo) vases from the Japanese Meiji era (1868 – 1912). This pair would have been made in the late 19th century circa 1885.

Both vases have an impressed studio/artist mark believed to be ‘TAKATANI’.

Each vase depicts upon a blue scrollwork background various mons and roundels and three larger cartouches that contain irises, prunus and chrysanthemum flowers.

Around the necks of the vases are multi-coloured lappets and around the bases are bands of fish-scale decoration.

For vases of over 100 years old they are in reasonable condition. There is the pitting one would normally expect of cloisonné items fired in the late 19th century and both have slight bruising that can be felt more easily than seen. One vase also has a ding to the shoulder with enamel loss of about 5mm and the other a dent to the metal base.

Their height is 4.25 inches (11 cms).
