This is an unusual, signed Japanese cloisonné 12 inch (30 cms) diameter charger.
Crafted using silver wire this colourful eye-catching piece dates from the Meiji period circa 1900. The wide royal blue borders are strongly decorated with chrysanthemums, peonies and prunus blossom. But it is the central black roundel that makes it rather unusual. It contains a striking pair of gin bari cranes in brilliant white, orange and purple enamel. For added effect , one crane, in moriage style has been raised to stand out from the surface of the charger. The back is counter enameled in blue that contains the maker’s mark in a darker blue. It is a mark I have seen before but I am unaware of an attribution to a studio. Having the firing pits expected on a piece of this age this dish is in good condition but has some minor losses to the counter enamel. Fortunately these same areas only show as a small chip and some slight hairlines on the front so the plate still displays very well.
