JAPANESE MEIJI YASUYUKI CLOISONNE VASE No 0680

THIS IS A SUPER BULBOUS SHAPED JAPANESE MEIJI CLOISONNE VASE CIRCA 1880

Although unsigned the quality of the work displayed on this vase from early in the Golden Age of Japanese cloisonné means it is by a top artist possibly even from the Tokyo workshop of Namikawa Yasuyuki.

As favoured by Yasuyuki it is decorated with an enameled brocade pattern below the top rim, whilst surrounding the base there are very attractively worked stylized lappets.

On the blue background a wonderfully depicted scene shows a fierce yellow-eyed hawk chasing several sparrows through the flowering branches of a cherry tree.

As can be seen in the images the whole scene is executed using gold or gilt wire.

This is a heavy vase with patinated bronze rims to top and bottom.

The condition is very good. As expected there is a certain amount of pitting from the firing process.

There are some very fine hairlines on the side of the vase towards the rear but they barely break the surface and are difficult to see. This is a very minor issue which I do not believe effects the desirability of this unusual vase. (This can just be seen in image 2 by the tip of the sparrow’s wing)
