This is an unusual miniature Japanese Satsuma vase standing only 2.75 inches (4.5 cms) high.
It dates to the late Meiji or Taisho period, circa 1890 - 1925. At first glance one would not think this to be Satsuma ware as apart from the base it is entirely covered in a dark cobalt glaze. But the base shows fine crackles typical of Satsuma and the cobalt glaze seen on many Kinkozan vases is very dark because of the thickness of its application. The simple decoration of chrysanthemums and a butterfly to the reverse is executed in raised gilding reminiscent of lacquer work. Apart from some minor rubbing of gilding on the rim both the vase is in excellent condition.
