SMALL JAPANESE SATSUMA CABINET VASE #SAT2

This is an unusual Japanese Satsuma vase standing only 4.25 inches (11 cms) high.

It dates to the late Meiji, Taisho or possibly early Showa period, circa 1890 - 1935.

At first glance one would not think this to be Satsuma ware as apart from the base it is entirely covered in a dark cobalt glaze.

But the base shows fine crackles typical of Satsuma and the cobalt glaze seen on many Kinkozan vases is very dark because of the thickness of its application.

Further confirmation of the origin is the signature of Tanzan a company which like Kinkozan also operated in the Awata district of Kyoto.

The understated decoration of iris blossoms to the front and reverse is very unusual as it is executed using a very thin application of silver glaze. The fine lines defining foliage and flowers has then been engraved into the silver

The decoration is completed by two silver bands to the rim and another at the base.

This beautiful little vase is in excellent condition.
