A sublime Lacquer obon (tray) dating from the 19th century.

It is made with inlaid gold and nacre on black and red lacquer, using several maki-e techniques and decorated with a Noh theater mask representing Okina, floating above a piece of cloth and a cord with tassels. Okina is considered the oldest of the Noh characters, even pre-dating the genre. It is the face of an old man, actually a god, with a rich smile, symbolizing youth, longevity and abundance...

A very attractive lacquer takatsuki (footed tray) dating from the 19th century (end of Edo period to beginning of Meiji period). It is decorated with sublime details in maki-e gold with leaves floating over a stylized brook.

The takatsuki is in very good condition. It is signed under the tray. There are a few minute dents at its foot (see picture 7), hardly avoidable marks of its age...

A very attractive kogo (incense box) made in the maki-e style of lacquer. It dates from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period.

The small box is decorated with an image of two butterflies flying above abundant foliage rendered in sublime details in inlaid gold and mother-of-pearl; without doubt the work of a master craftsman.

The writings on the wooden box read "Jidai maki-e suzuguchi kogai". It roughly translates as "period maki-e suzuguchi incense box...
