This intriguing vessel is an Aka-raku johai chawan (red raku “goblet” tea bowl). It was made by a potter named Nishimura Ichiraku, born in 1952 in Kyoto. Raku ware has been closely associated with the Japanese tea ceremony for more than 400 years.
