This apparently simple bowl is made in the Hakeme style of pottery, where a white slip is applied to the pottery prior to firing, a technique developed by Korean potters. This particular vessel dates from the first part of the Joseon period of Korea (1392-1897). It is the sobriety and simple elegance of that kind of pottery that made hakeme bowls popular with the Japanese tea ceremony practitioners, especially during the 16th century, when high ranked warriors and feudal lords patronized that art and the craftsmen who made its utensils. Many Korean potters were actually brought back to Japan then and established kilns there. Please inquire if you have some questions. The bowl is in very good condition. There are a few fine hairlines running from its mouth, but these are not usual, given the age of the bowl, and actually enhance its beauty, from a “wabi-sabi” aesthetic perspective.
