This remarkable hanaire (flower vase) is part of a series of mostly antique and vintage items that we recovered from the storehouse of a retired construction contractor. His house is located in the southern part of Kyoto, where buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods still stand. His son not being interested in inheriting his father's collection, we were asked to take them out, and we are now able to present them to you. The vase dates from the Edo period (1615-1868). It is a Karatsu ware, made in the town of Karatsu, a pottery production center for more than four hundred years, located in Saga prefecture, in northern Kyushu. Karatsu ware has been a favorite of Japanese tea ceremony practitioners who appreciate its simple beauty and natural feel. The white glaze runs down like the branches of a willow, over the grey body of this hanaire, creating a wonderful keshiki (landscape). This classic piece wears its age well, in spite of a few chips (see pictures 6 and 7) and a little damaged foot rim (see picture 9, on the left). It has the noble air of a pottery that stood in the tea rooms of masters. It brings an air of serenity and stops the time of the space it is in.
