This splendid chawan (tea bowl) was made by a potter named Moritoki Taiyu. It is part of a series of bowls which come directly from his warehouse. Moritoki Taiyu was born in Bizen in 1920. At the age of 30, he began studying pottery, starting with Bizen ware and moving on to Mino ware (oribe, seto, shino...). Moritoki Taiyu is also known for his calligraphic works, which shows honesty, fortitude and dynamism, traits also found in his pottery. This particular bowl is made in the Shino style of pottery, which was born in the kilns of the Mino province (current Aichi and Gifu prefectures) more than four hundred years ago, during the Momoyama period (1568-1615). A strong vessel with a masculine allure. The energetic underglaze markings seem to form the spine with which the bowl stands, its dynamism canalized into a forthright soldier-like posture. This classic looking chawan is an ode to the tea ceremony chalices that have served in ancient tatami matted tea rooms. Please let us know if you have some questions.
