A very attractive antique leather tabako-ire (tobacco pouch) dating from the end of the Edo period (1615-1868) to the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912).
Although the pouch shows signs of its age, it is obviously made with fine leather. Its most remarkable feature, however, is its menuki (ornament) made in sublime details in the shape of a mantis; another wonderful example of the mastery of 19th century Japanese metal craftsmen.
As can be seen on the pictures, the pouch is torn is a few places. The menuki is in excellent condition.
Dimensions: pouch 12.8 x 8.8 cm (5.1 x 3.5 in); menuki 4.1 x 1.7 cm (1.6 x 0.7 in)
